The Gymteq Academy programme utilises an evidence-based progressive curriculum, incorporating the principles of long-term athletic development to help every young athlete reach their full potential. Used within most elite youth sporting programmes, athletic development aims to improve all-round performance and reduces the risk of injury.
Based on the well-established principles of long-term athletic development, strength and conditioning has become a fundamental component of youth performance programmes. Regular participation in a structured strength programme has been shown to increase strength, power, muscular endurance, improve speed, change of direction, stability and balance as well as reducing the risk of injury. Strength training in children and adolescents has been a controversial topic over the years but is now widely accepted as a safe and beneficial form of training. There is a large body of scientific and clinical evidence that supports strength training for young athletes, and organisations such as the UK Strength & Conditioning Association and the American College of Sports Medicine all promote the participation of children and adolescents in strength programmes. The key is that it must be appropriate for the young athletes’ stage of development and supervised by a qualified coach to ensure that it is both safe and effective.
At Gymteq we use a 3 level system to ensure that the exercises, loads and training volumes are all suitable for the athlete’s age, experience level and stage of development. The emphasis is on mastering the fundamental movement patterns and perfecting the techniques at each level before progressing to the next one. With this method we can start in level one with bodyweight exercises and loaded movements with light dumbbells and kettlebells, before progressing to barbells and introducing more complex movements in levels 2 and 3.
Our structured approach ensures that each athlete works at a level appropriate for their ability and optimal for their development. By prioritising safety and gradual progression, we provide young athletes with a foundation that supports both their immediate performance and long-term athletic growth.
